For most of us, our homes represent our biggest investment and are second only to our loved ones as things in our lives we want to protect. If you’ve worked hard to own a home and to furnish and decorate it to be a reflection of your life and style, you want to do everything you can to protect that investment. And more importantly you want to protect the people and pets that live there from becoming victims of crime.

Home security is a multifaceted task. While installing an electronic security system with an alarm and 24-hour monitoring is a big step toward ensuring the security of your home, it is still only part of the approach you should take. Many of the obvious steps, like locking doors and installing deadbolt locks and slider locks have been around for so long because they work. Criminals don’t want to have to take the time to get through a deadbolt lock only to be confronted with a shrieking alarm.

The key to home security is to make it difficult for a criminal to victimize you. Most criminals don’t want to work very hard to pick up valuable items like works of art, computer equipment, or luxury furniture. They would much rather take their chances with the house down the street that nobody ever locks than to go to the trouble of foiling layer upon layer of home security.
Today’s security systems are able to incorporate other devices than just burglar alarms. Many of them can be set up to include fire protection, or doorway communication devices such as intercoms or even remote cameras to monitor the people that come to your front door. While no home security system is perfect, a comprehensive approach to protecting your valuable belongings and your loved ones will discourage or prevent crimes from occurring in your home.
